Session Notes

Brad Wheeler
All projects need Capitol and overhead and production. He is the overhead.

Course Management Systems and Digital library are two separate worlds both as systems and organizations.

Faculty and students need access to libary "stuff"

Attaching files and uploading is a nightmare for storage and replications.

Want drag and drop of citiation (Ajax?)

Much progress, a Sakai provisional tool from IU Bloomington library. OKI put service underneath.

Jeff Kahn (from OKI) – technical overview. See slides for visuals.

OKI moving to a more community based website for downloading files need.

Table at tech demo

Demo:

  • Regular download includes several existing repositories (including images)
  • Can federate
  • Been able to integrate new systems within a day or two (as long as in protocal understand)
  • Everyplace have editor have the integration. Make sense in workflow of student and instructor.
  • UI interaction will evolve
  • Show MIT Visualizing cultures Image database. Same service, different app. Save on resources.
  • VUE - also using same service
    • iTune content search from VUE (searching local iTunes)

Image Content Activity: How get zoomable or moving images? Community conventions need to be defined.

Documentation for installation of Twin peaks on collaboration site.

Hoping to prototype tool that allows filter based on role/others.

Questions and Answers

Q: Resources/repositories constrained by course or discipline?
A: Not this tool at this time. But could.

Q: Set up repository – open free? How deal with authentication?
A: In Sakai model, default are open. In IU implementation recognizes IP.

Q: Search syntax?
A: Search types can be defined with what types of search types support. client can make decision.

Q: How do we get from here to a lot of libraries and repositories
A: Some reference implementations: MIT and Tufts. Family of Sakai tools that will implement.

Q: How long to get services into API
A: How take OKI work and get it into our campus. Move plug-in already have. Twin peaks is in demonstrator. Have the concept have the technical, but need to get together. Take what have and tie into whole world of licensed content. Pilots with real faculty, students using real experiences.

Q: SRU?
