Session Abstract

Zach Thomas from Texas State will demonstrate setting up a development environment, engineering best practices, and how to make sense of all that code.

Presentation Materials

I compressed my presentation movie way down to make the file smaller, but even then I ended up having to break the talk into three parts. I wanted to keep the resolution high enough so that you can still easily follow what's going on in the demonstrations. I think it turned out ok.

This was one of the best sessions of its type that I've ever attended. I hope you'll be able to post it or at least some of the information from it – I'd like some of my staff to go through it. Were you using screen captures? – very slick, I thought it was all live.

Thanks for the compliments everybody. It's taking longer than I expected to record a voiceover to go with the presentation. I wasted a lot of time yesterday trying to make PowerPoint do it. I hope to have it finished within the next 24 hours.

re: screen captures. I used Snapz Pro X to capture the screens. There were 3 reasons I didn't do it live:

Some of the operations I was demonstrating would have taken up to ten minutes to demonstrate live. The magic of editing allowed me to convey the gist of it without taking up a lot of time.
I have a hard time talking and typing at the same time. I knew I could save time by having the tasks pre-canned.
Many of the actions I was demonstrating suck up a lot of bandwidth. I didn't want to have to rely on the hotel's network.

Zack, thank you for the time you have spent putting this video together. I have been waiting patiently, and was very pleased to see it posted. However, I am having trouble with the video. After I decompress it and try to run the video, I get an error that says "The movie file 'sakai_getting_started.mov' cannot be found. Without this file, the movie cannot play properly". The video never does play.

If anyone knows what is wrong and how to fix it please let me know.

I think I see what's wrong. I combined an audio track with a video track and instead of including a copy of the video, it just has a reference to the original video file.

I'm fixing it now. I think this file is going to wind up much larger.

I am experiencing the same. The audio works, but there is no video.

Thanks for making this video available. I know it will be very helpful for many developers who just need a little nudge to get their dev environments set up.
