 UCamp Theme

Time is fast approaching for the Sakai UCamp and so we need to start planning what talks and design projects we want to include. We have a nice list of suggestions but for any design projects, the design team will need to prepare ahead of time so we need to select something. Check email lists for more discussion. This page is to brainstorm ideas for the U-Camp (all day event) and the UCamp and Developers Cafe collaboration at the end of the day.  Have some ideas about how best we can take advantage of these times?  Please add them here.

U-Camp Goals

We see the U-Camp as an opportunity to share best practices for design, show developers and others how to add usability to their designs and to leverage the face to face time to best advantage.

  • UCamp is a "camp" so it should be interactive, educational and fun (think summer camp with a UCD focus).

UCamp Brainstorming Ideas

We've had some really great brainstorming ideas for the Sakai UCamp which I'm listing below.

Proposed Format for UCamp:
- morning - Design talks around UCD ideas (see list below)
- afternoon - Design + Developer collaboration on a project (Sprint idea)

UCD Topics for Potential Talks/Workshops:
* Accessibility
* User Needs Assessment
* Design Patterns

Design + Developer Sprint

Programmer's Cafe located in Baycliff Room.

Design Wireframes in JPG Format
Filename Description
sakai-preferences-dashboard.jpg Contains wireframe of proposed Preferences dashboard. Interaction notes are included in the file indicating what happens when the user clicks on different links and buttons.  The Account Info page listed in this table has not changed from the current out-of-box Sakai version.

Each of the 3 files is displayed after the user clicks the appropriate "Edit" button on the Dashboard (or in some cases a link on the dashboard).  For more detailed Interaction notes please see the file "sakai-preferences-dashboard.jpg".
sakai-preferences-customizetabs-edit.jpg New version where the user can decide whether a site is "Active" or "Hidden".  For "Active" sites the user can also decide which ones are visible as Tabs.
sakai-preferences-notifications-edit.jpg New version where a table format is used to display each type of Low Priority notification and its setting.  User can modify the settings in the table.
[^sakai-preferences-accountinfo-edit.jpg] Not a new version.

Membership Tool Design

  • currently needs improvement for managing a lot of sites
  • needs improved searchability

Lightning Talk Signup

Lightning Talks were very successful at the JA-Sig Unconference and so we are hosting them at the UCamp.

What is a "lightning talk"?
A lightning talk is a quick presentation of short 10 minutes or less with or without slides. You discuss a topic of interest to you that you want to share with the community.  See also discussion of lightning talks in Wikipedia As well as being tremendously interesting and entertaining for attendees, lightning talks offer an unequaled opportunity for new speakers to present for the first time without going to the lengths required for a longer talk.
