Add your suggestions for "bite size" usability / accessibility issues to be focused on during the design brainstorm:
Workshop appropriate (right size problem & general UX problem)
'More sites' dropdown Tim
UCT's top usability issue as reflected in support emails - users do not find the 'more sites' dropdown and think their sites have disappeared. See SAK-7489 for some discussion on this.
Availability (i.e. Show / Hide) in Announcements and Resources Mike
We have two different UIs for setting availability by date in Announcements and Resources. Which one should we standardise on - or should we have an intermediate version?
Improved UI for Wiki generally (Marc)
Very happy to volunteer the wiki tool generally for discussion.
Improved UI for customise tabs in Preferences +1 (Mark N)
This is really useful functionality but none of our users are finding it. How can we make customise tabs more obvious in the first place, and then easier to use?
Improved UI when trying to access a site you aren't a member of +1
Some people send round links directly to their Sakai worksite to colleagues and students. People who click on that link but who aren't already members don't get any helpful feedback to explain that's why they can't see it.
Note - we at Cambridge are working on a tool to do this...
Highlight and clarify the "Reset" button +1
Since fixing the "Back" button is so difficult, maybe we can find a way to make the "Reset" button more salient and clearer. Several users have volunteered that "Back" makes more sense to them than "Reset," the current alt text.
Allow for an accessible rich-text (WYSIWYG) editor option (Colin)
The current Sakai rich-text editors (FCK, HTMLarea) are not (very) accessible and don't really have an option to edit rich text without coding HTML. A better solution would be to toggle to an accessible option, perhaps outside the WYSIWYG itself. What the accessible option would be is would be another design challenge. I'm just suggesting figuring we figure out how to do a toggle.
Layout often awkward (e.g. Announcements & Gradebook) +1 (Daphne) (will look at announcements layout)
Perhaps a tool like announcements could be chosen to look at.
Difficult orientation to Selected site/My workspace +1(Julie)
Highlight the selected site in some way. Differentiate course and project sites from My workspace? Users have a tough time identifying what site they're in (Recommendation: increase size and contrast of items that identify the current site.) +1
Related to several comments above but maybe this is a more bite size chunk by itself?
Term "Roster" used for both "Edit Class Roster(s)" in Site Info and on Roster page in GB; should be reserved for place where can edit the roster. +1
Defining what each of the roster related page are conceptually for users would be a great step forward.
Schedule - "Add" button overlooked; expected at bottom or near grid items +1
Goal Aware Assignments - improving the workflow for tagging assignments with outcomes(Goals) and rating/grading student work.
Related to emerging OSP needs to support a larger workflow for building portfolios.
Future Work (probably too big for short workshop and/or specific to a tool)
Improved UI for Polls tool
We (UCT) would be happy to volunteer the Polls tool for design discussion. We delayed creating a 'final' UI design for this tool while we implemented the basic functionality (more or less following Sakai UI style guide conventions), and it is in need of an improved design to support inter alia rich text editors and better page flow for creating polls. We also now have further end-user experience which could inform design ideas.
Wiki Permissions
Maybe not very bitesized, so we might not end up with final specs from the brainstorm, but it would be good to look at the wiki permissions.
Permissions
Even less bitesized, how about trying to think through a global plan for presenting roles and permissions is a way that more users could understand?
Improved UI for the Search tool
Very happy to volunteer the search tool generally for discussion, though there isn't a huge amount of it! Could re-do the admin page, I suppose.
Layout for assessments in the instructor view if assessment editing/retraction
Currently assessments are broken up into "Core" and "Published". If retraction is allowed, this division will become blurry if not necessary. How should this view be chunked with this new functionality?
Standardize on "site" or "worksite". [and find places that need fixed] +1
Partial saving of state is confusing, inconvenient, and makes it hard to find a specific feature. +1
Identifying the right functional solution here would be useful.
¿ Initial user disorientation [Medium] +1
Consider alternate site structure than collection of tools, e.g. left nav is weeks. An organization other than tool based could be defined with next steps as to how the work can be completed.
Difficult orientation to relationship between selected site and selected tool +1
This could be part of the above work.
Users have a difficult time identifying what's clickable (Recommendation: make clickable items look 3D) +1
Identify different types of links (column sorting, action links, navigation links, etc.) and their visual design.
User (s?) could not find/see site membership +1
Table headers not understood as clickable +1
Could be related to general link issue above.
