(version 1.5 - info provided by Michael Beasley and Nadine Blackwood)
There are two areas where permissions affect Sakai users - their account type, and their role within a particular site. The account type is outside the scope of a particular site, and a user's role within a site is within the scope of that site only. A user may have one account type, but may have different roles in different sites.
- Account Types
- Admin - The Admin account is a special account with hardcoded abilities. The Admin's My Workspace contains administration tools which effectively render it a worksite for managing the entire system. There is no editable type on the admin account. Sakai has a feature that allows you to have more than one user have "admin" rights. The realm for the site !admin (the realm is called /site/!admin) which should be in your Sakai from the distribution can be used for this. Grant a user the admin role in this site, and that user becomes a full admin to all of Sakai.

- Non-Admin accounts - Normal users have a type on their account. The type determines whether they can create new worksites or not. Sakai includes the following account types by default:
- maintain user type, which denotes an account which can create new worksites.
- registered user type, also able to create new worksites. This is the type accounts created with the New Account tool are assigned.
- guest user type does not have the ability to create new worksites.
- Non-Admin accounts - Normal users have a type on their account. The type determines whether they can create new worksites or not. Sakai includes the following account types by default:
- Role permissions: Users have a role in user-created worksites. Each role has default permissions, which can be changed by the creator (or other maintainer) of the site. Included is a summary of the permissions for each standard Sakai tool:
