Some goals for learnign design standards:
Generalize the learning design process and experience in such a way that its components (besides content) can be systematically described in a common information model, framework or schema. Examples of components are a discussion, or a multi-person collaborative exercise
Be broad enough to accommodate many learning theories and practices
Provide a common mechanism for describing a learning experience
Provide a common mechanism for describing the interoperable, reusable, and sustainable exchange of learning strategies and experiences between learning platforms
Make every effort to harmonize its work with other IMS (and related) specification activities
Develop standards that will facilitate the ability to utilize exported material in new environments without the need for recompilation or additional libraries
Develop standards that will facilitate the ability to incorporate higher-level web languages into the packages (i.e.. JAVA)
Develop standards that will utilize the more mundane scripting and mark-up languages, with security controls that prevent access to changing user machine information. (similar to how applets work)
Develop standards that would allow us to take specific course elements and apply those to a repeatable schema or templates (specific course elements range from very broad descriptions of learning materials such as syllabus, chapter, etc.; to smaller elements such as practice activity, illustrations, concepts, examples; and include processes, procedures, descriptions, or sequences of activities such as collaboration).
Provide the industry with R&D input to do their specification work
Provide the industry with R&D input related to faculty development (e.g. through action research), related to the use of the framework or schema
Develop a generic meta-framework (object model) related to the design and delivery of a learning experience that would allow for specific learning experiences (informed by unique learning strategies or learning styles) to be expressed in a consistent fashion across multiple environments
Establish a rigorous conceptual framework that can be referenced (reviewed, updated,...) and chunked down into a series of smaller scope documents from which specifications pertaining to Learning Design can be developed
Provide a case study, or suggested approaches, for using the specifications in a repeatable, effective and efficient manner (i.e. these items should be defined both from technical implementation and authoring implementation point of view).
Develop a culturally inclusive and accessible model
Develop a schema that can be used a diverse audience that includes faculty (content developers and designers), instructional designers, learners, and researchers
