State of Open Source: Time for a Reality Check?

Friday
8:30 am - 10:00 am
Room: Grand B

Session Abstract

Open source software is making its way into higher education in various ways and from various sources. It's time to quantify the adoption and attitudes of open source decision makers as well as to understand what are the incentives and roadblocks to open source. This session will discuss the recently published and ongoing research conducted by the Alliance for Higher Education Competitiveness (A- HEC) in conjunction with the IMS Global Learning Consortium that surveyed more than 200 U.S. higher education CIOs and decision makers. The study has quantified adoption rates of all types of open source initiatives, infrastructure (such as Linux) and application (such as Moodle or Sakai) as well as attitudes regarding total cost of ownership, ability to implement, and future expectations. We also will have an open discussion on how IMS can help development of the industry and gather input on how IMS and SAKAI Community can work together to achieve the best return on industry investment across open source and non-open source products
