Shaking the Vending Machine: Management and Pedagogical Implications of OSS

Jeshua Pacifici - LT Senior Manager, Kim Gausepohl - Learning Systems Manager of VIRGINIA TECH

Thursday
1:15 pm - 2:45 pm
Room: Gulf BCD

Session Abstract

This session illustrates lessons learned and provides recommendations for institutions contemplating the introduction of open-source applications while maintaining enterprise vendor software. Beginning in 2004 Virginia Tech introduced the open-source portfolio (OSP) and course management system (SAKAI) to the university community and faced the management and pedagogical implications of deploying open-source products while maintaining Blackboard. This session will draw from experiences with vendors and identify reasons to consider and adopt open source solutions.
