Session Abstract
The best thing about community-source development projects, even more impressive than the software they produce, is the opportunity they provide to participate in the development community. Thus, to use Sakai is to join the world's most exciting, progressive community of researchers pioneering new e-learning strategies, new pedagogical models, new forms of collective and distributed learning, new ways to inspire student minds. But therein lies a challenge. A compelling argument can be made that, in order to gain major university-wide allegiance, we are going to have to convince large numbers of instructors that they will not have to join the Sakai development community, will not have to think about e-learning, LMSes, or portfolios, will not have to embrace these or any other new and wonderful ideas. To open up the purse strings (or anyway so this argument goes), we have to convince large numbers of people that Sakai can be made so transparent that they will not have to think about it at all. So should our strategy be to excite people about Sakai? Or should we instead strive to make Sakai invisible? Or is there a third way?
