This session was a collaborative brainstorming session focused on generating conversation about possible visions for the future of Sakai in terms of its ability to support the core mission the universities that adopt it. The ideas listed below were generated by the session participants.
The following are the rules of the road under which they were generated:
- This is brainstorming. We are not trying to filter out "bad" or "impractical" ideas, or to prioritize. That will hopefully come later.
- The focus here is on directly supporting the core mission of the university (e.g., teaching, learning, research). There are lots of other ways in which Sakai can add value (e.g., as a method for university IT departments to achieve greater vendor independence and/or cost effectiveness, etc.). Those are worthy areas of interest, but they are not the focus this conversation.
What comes afterward is up to the community. The hope is that these visioning sessions will generate enough enthusiasm that participants will be interested in taking some of these ideas forward into more practical planning conversations about resourcing and implementation.
The Opportunity
What are the opportunities for a project like Sakai to support the university mission? What are the pain points for teachers, students, and scholars that we can help to address?
- Increase access to education by supporting asynchronous distance learning
- Create affordances that encourage teachers to share content
- Organize content and collaboration - for teaching and research collaboration
- provide place for research data to be used for teaching purposes

- create place where people can come together for the benefit of university

What strengths does Sakai offer that aren't covered under the headings of "platform" or "community", e.g., license, legal structure, etc.?

Putting It All Together
Given the opportunities and the strengths articulated above, how might Sakai be able to play a role in furthering the mission of participating institutions?
