    From Jim Eng:
    Hi boat people,

Walk out the front of the hotel and turn left. Go a couple blocks (past the tram stop) to Kattend Straat. I'm getting that name from a map and I'm not sure there is a sign. Just watch for the bridge to the left. It's only a couple blocks. Cross the bridge. Notice the bike paths, pedestrian paths and roadway.

After crossing the bridge, if you were to walk around to the left, past the skate park and playground, you might see a steamboat in dock. I say "might" because I'm not sure whether it's permanently docked there. Maybe it goes out for cruises at times. It's there right now. I can see it from my hotel room. When you get close enough, it looks like it's a restaurant. Very nicely appointed.

If you go to the right off the bridge, walking as close to the river as you can, you'll see lots of boats in the water. To my untrained eye, a few look like two masted schooners. Some like old barges. Most seem to be house boats now, although some may still ship out. You'll come to another bridge that returns to the city. This one carries trams as well as cars, bikes and pedestrians. Past this bridge are more interesting boats. You'll see some river traffic, as well as the boats at dock.

You can walk around to the other side of the island. More of the boats moored here seem to be visiting. You'll see more river traffic, also.

I'm guessing it's three or four miles to walk around the entire island and back to the hotel. Took me about an hour on inline skates, stopping several times to look at things.

BTW, I noticed a couple cafes or restaurants on the island that could be worth checking out.

If anybody wants to take this walk and try to figure out the background on any of the boats, I would be glad to go along if we can arrange a time. Or if you go on your own, I'd love to hear your thoughts about any of the boats you find noteworthy.

Anybody interested in doing this walk or another today at 3 pm or after 8 pm?
